In south-central NY, northeast of Elmira; organized Apr 7, 1817 from Cayuga and Seneca counties. Name Origin: For Daniel D. Tompkins (1774-1825), associate justice of the NY supreme court (1804-07), governor (1807-17) and U.S. vice president (1817-25)
