A suborder of the soil order Vertisol; it is the driest soil of the order and forms cracks that tend to remain open; occurs in arid regions.

The soil at the site is classified as a self-mulching, torrert Vertisol in USDA Soil Taxonomy (Soil Survey Staff 1998) or as a haplic, black Vertosol in the Australian Soil Classification (Isbell 2002).
