Traversay

the northern group of the South Sandwich Islands, in the antarctic (56° 33’ S lat., 27° 40’ W long.). The Traversay group consists of three volcanic islands, Leskov, Zavodovski, and Visokoi (formerly Torson). Elevations in the group range up to 914 m (on Visokoi Island), and all three islands are covered with ice. The Traversay Islands were discovered on Jan. 3, 1820, by a Russian expedition led by F. F. Bellingshausen and M. P. Lazarev. The island group was named in honor of the Russian minister of the navy at the time, and the individual islands were named for members of the expedition.
