a river in Aktiubinsk, Gur’ev, and Ural’sk oblasts, Kazakh SSR. The Uil is 800 km long and drains an area of 31,500 sq km. It rises in the central part of the Cis-Uralic Plateau and empties into Lake Aktobe in the Caspian Lowland. The river is fed mainly by snow. The maximum flow rate in the lower course is 260 cu m per sec. In summer the Uil divides into reaches and becomes brackish. The river freezes in late November, and the ice breaks up in late March. The river’s main tributaries are the Kiil on the right and the Ashiuil on the left. The Uil is used for irrigation.
