Ubangi-Shari

 

from 1914 to 1958, a colony in French Equatorial Africa. Colonial tyranny provoked many uprisings among the local population. In 1958 the area was given the status of an autonomous republic, and it was renamed the Central African Republic. In 1960 the republic gained its independence.
