Ubayyid, Al-

 

(also el-Obeid), a city in Sudan and the capital of Kurdufan (Kordofan) Province. Population, 74,000 (1973). The center of a cattle-raising region, al-Ubayyid has a railroad station and is a highway and caravan route junction. A soap factory is located in the city. Al-Ubayyid is a trade center for gum arabic.
