upsample

(1) To make a digital audio signal higher quality by increasing the sample rate, for example, from 44.1 kHz to 88.2 kHz, and interjecting new samples in between existing samples. The sample size (word size) is also increased for finer granularity. The objective is to have a smoother digital wave going into the digital-to-analog converter (see DAC). Contrast with downsample. See sampling, oversampling and high-resolution audio.

(2) To increase the color depth of a digital image, for example, from 16 bits per pixel to 24 bits per pixel. See color depth, pixel and upscale.
