Urmuli

the general name for Georgian songs performed by drivers riding on an arba (cart). The songs of this type are monodic and are characterized by the alternation of a recitative and of richly ornamented melodies; they generally allow a certain degree of improvisation. Each stanza begins in an upper register, and the melody subsequently drops to a tonic foundation.
