Urup

 

an island in the southwestern Kuril Islands, between the Urup and Friz straits. Urup Island is 120 km long and has an area of 1,430 sq km. The island reaches its highest elevation—1,426 m—at Mount Vysokaia. The island has four volcanic ranges: Krishtofovich, Petr Shmidt, Shokal’skii, and Kompaneiskii. Each range is composed of several volcanoes whose bases are connected. Two of the 25 volcanoes—Trezubets and Berga—are active. On the slopes of the volcanoes there are dwarf stone pines and alder and birch elfin woodland with bamboo thickets.


Urup

 

an urban-type settlement in Urup Raion, Karachai-Cherkess Autonomous Oblast. Situated on the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, Urup lies on the Urup River, a tributary of the Kuban’. The settlement is 120 km southwest of the city of Cherkessk. Industry is represented by a dressing combine for copper ore.


Urup

 

a river in the Northern Caucasus, a left tributary of the Kuban’ River. The Urup is 231 km long and drains an area of 3,220 sq km. It rises on the slopes of Mount Urup in the Greater Caucasus. In its upper course, the Urup is a mountain river; in its lower course, it flows along a plain. The river is fed by mixed sources, but primarily by rain; freshets sometimes occur as a result of heavy rain. The mean flow rate is 16.5 cu m per sec. Between December and February, the Urup freezes over intermittently. The river is used for irrigation. The city of Armavir is located near the mouth of the Urup.
