A suborder of the soil order Alfisol; red or brown soil formed in a ustic moisture regime and in a mesic or warmer temperature regime.

Due to the effect of the dry season on soil moisture (see below), this soil can be classified as Ustalf. Near the ridge top (plots 4 and 5) organic layers reached a thickness between 2 and 3cm, whereas organic layers on the remaining plots ranged only between 0.5 and 1.5cm.
