a river in the northwestern part of Bulgaria, a right tributary of the Danube. Length, 195 km; area of basin, 3,200 sq km. The Vit is formed by the confluence of the Cherni-Vit and Beli-Vit rivers, which originate in the ZlatishkoTetevenska Planina (of the Stara Planina [Balkan Mountain] system). As far as the village of Glozhene this river flows through mountains, but then it comes out onto the Danubian Plain. The average water discharge at the town of lasen is approximately 15 cu m per sec (during average flow). In the spring there is an increase in the amount of water flow, whereas during the summer and autumn the river almost dries up. There is a hydroelectric power plant on the Vit River.
