vacuum fluctuation

A fluctuation in the value of a quantity that is associated with the vacuum state having zero-point energy. The existence of vacuum fluctuations is a specifically quantum-mechanical effect. It is thought that quantum fluctuations in the early Universe were responsible for the large-scale structure in the Universe.
