Valdai

 

a city, the administrative center of Valdai Raion, Novgorod Oblast, RSFSR. It is located on Lake Valdai. The city has a railroad station on the Bologoe-Pskov line, and a 58-km branch goes from Valdai to Kresttsy. Population, 11,900 (1969). In the city are a machine factory (grinding machine-tools and pumps), a metal products factory, an automobile repair plant, a fruit- and vegetable-processing plant, a dairy, a knitted-goods factory, a fish-processing combine, and an agricultural technicum. The city was founded in 1770. It was famous for its handicrafts: the production of coach bells and artistic embroidery.
