It was known as Nagybecskerek until its transfer (1918; confirmed 1920) from Hungary to Yugoslavia, and it was subsequently named Veliki Bečkerek (until the 1930s) and Petrovgrad (until 1947).

The city has a landing on the Becej River (which has been made into a canal) and is a railroad junction. Zrenjanin’s industries include flour-milling, brewing, and sugar refining, tobacco, textiles, and leather. It is also noted for river shipbuilding, agricultural and electrical-engineering machine building, the production of motors and boilers, and woodworking.
