Vertical Collimator

The following article is from The Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1979). It might be outdated or ideologically biased.

Vertical Collimator

an optical geodetic instrument used to construct a plumb line at a given point and to shift the point up and down. It consists of a straight or sectioned short-focus telescope, whose line of sight is leveled by means of three elevating screws on the support. A vertical collimator can be a self-sufficient instrument, but it is often built into other geodetic instruments and used to center the instrument above a given point. In such cases it is called an optical plumb.
