The most intriguing of these was a find, this past summer, of gemmy orange villiaumite crystals from the Aris phonolite quarry.
Those villiaumite specimens from Namibia make for a neat segue, here, entirely out of Africa and to Russia.
Just as noteworthy are the pegmatite's remarkable, well-formed crystals of thorosteenstrupine (the first ever found), kazakovite, chkalovite, vuonnemite, nalipoite, revdite, minerals of the nordite-(Ce)/ferronordite-(Ce) series, very large segregations of zakharovite, villiaumite, plates of lomonosovite, the rare sulfides bartonite and chlorbartonite, and water-clear, gem-quality nepheline.
Grishin proposed a fitting name for the pegmatite: the Palitra (in English, "palette"), in allusion to the large pods of brightly colored minerals (red villiaumite, pearly-white natrosilite, green aegirine, lilac ussingite, lemon-yellow vuonnemite, crimson sodalite, orange eudialyte, salmon-pink serandite, dark-brown lomonosovite and lorenzenite, etc.) that had been exposed.
In some areas, the foyaite is enriched by sodalite and villiaumite lenses up to 20 cm thick; these lenses lie between the pegmatite and the malignite layer.
Other sporadic miarolitic constituents include eudialyte, villiaumite
, fluorapophyllite, calcite, biotite, fluorite and analcime.
Taking a break now from common species, consider a one-of-a-kind, indubitably-world's-best specimen of a very rare species, which Rob Lavinsky (doing the Munich Show for the first time) was proudly showing around: a loose, nearly complete, 3-cm crystal of villiaumite
found very recently in the Aris Phonolite in Namibia.
Associated minerals are: feldspar, sodalite, nepheline, analcime, aegirine, lovozerite, lomonosovite, vuonnemite, lamprophyllite, tisinalite, manaksite, umbozerite, molybdenite and villiaumite
Associated minerals are: cancrisilite, microcline, sodalite, villiaumite
, natrolite, pectolite, lomonosovite, barytolaniprophyllite, catapleiite, natron, thermonatrite, sazykinaite-(Y), "Nbrinkite," vitusite-(Ce) and fluorcaphite.
The sill is also remarkable for the relative abundance of other minerals characteristic of agpaitic rocks such as catapleiite, lavenite, lorenzenite and mangan-neptunite, and for the presence of villiaumite, vuonnemite and many rare-earth-element (REE)-bearing minerals such as ancylite-(Ce), bastnasite-(Ce), cordylite-(Ce), monazite-(Ce) and synchysite(Ce).
Sodalite-enriched zones of rock in the southern end of the Demix-Varennes quarry exposed during 1994-96 contained a number of species not previously encountered in the quarry, including villiaumite, varennesite, vuonnemite, epistolite, gaidonnayite and calciohilairite.
In miarolitic cavities it is associated with eudialyte, microcline, aegirine, zakharovite, mangan-neptunite, makatite, natrolite, smectite group mineral A, VUK1, VUK7, VUK8 and villiaumite. In hydrothermalites, it is associated with natrolite, magadiite, serandite, chalcedony, makatite, polylithionite, shkatulkalite, eudialyte, pectolite, lorenzenite, monazite-(Ce), VUK1, VUK9, galena, sphalerite, fluorite, dawsonite and tuperssuatsiaite.
