In east-central KS, west of Topeka; organized as Richardson County Aug 30, 1855 (prior to statehood); name changed Feb 11, 1859. Name Origin: For Wabaunsee (1760-1845), a Potawatomi chief. Meaning of the name is uncertain: possibly 'dawn of day'; others not sufficiently documented or satisfactory are 'he lives through the winter,' 'daylight,' and 'boggy day.'
