Carsten Spohr was born on 16 December 1966 in Wanne-Eickel. After obtaining a degree in industrial engineering, he went on to acquire his commercial airline pilotEoACAOs licence at the Lufthansa Pilot School in Bremen and Phoenix.
The plane, which contained six airmen, was believed to have been heading for the Huels Chemical Plant when it was shot down over Wanne-Eickel.
