waste gate

A controllable butterfly valve in the exhaust pipe of a reciprocating engine equipped with a turbocharger. The valve controls the amount of exhaust gases that can be forced through the turbocharger. The valve gradually closes with height until it is rated at full-throttle or another selected value is reached when it is fully closed. At this time, all exhaust gases must pass through the turbocharger. See also butterfly valve.

The 231's fixed wastegate means the turbo is working constantly and the engine is susceptible to overboosting.
Wastegate turbocharging is used for the F3.8, B4.5 and L9 engines, and the B6.7 retains variable-geometry technology.
The exhaust note has been tuned for a raucous effect and this combined with the wastegate sound effects means that you won't miss an approaching 4C.
"It was a fixing within the wastegate mechanism of the turbocharger that failed (for Massa)," said head of performance engineering Rob Smedley.
Tom |finished by the end of the day's third stage, his engine was misfiring and a failing turbocharger wastegate actuator was diagnosed as the problem.
Cooper Standard products, including exhaust gas recirculation modules, electronic coolant pumps and valves, electronic wastegate actuators and electronic throttle bodies, as well as related assets from operations in North America, Germany, France and the Czech Republic along with certain engineering and other resources in North America and Germany are intended to transfer to existing HVCC locations over the next several months as a part of the transaction.
This exhaust note, another focus of the engineering team, was achieved by adding a tuned exhaust to a complex web of equal length manifolds to provide the evocative Ferrari sound even with the turbos, the latter almost unnoticeable other than some wastegate chatter as you change up at the 7,500 redline [grin].
I don't know if it increases the power at all but you can hear the turbocharger whining and the valve in the wastegate popping off excess boost.

A one-piece serpentine block furnishes extra strength and rigidity, while a wastegate turbocharger provides better bottom-end response and less heat rejection.
With the wastegate turbo, a small turbine housing is used to increase the pressure to the turbine wheel at low exhaust gas flows.
