Weiser, Johann Conrad

(1696–1760) Indian agent; born near Herrenberg, Germany. He emigrated to New York before settling in Pennsylvania in 1729. He learned the dialects of the Iroquois tribes and pursued good relations with them. In response to the threat of war with French Canada, he arranged formal conferences with the Indians in Philadelphia in 1731 and 1736 and made the Iroquois alliance binding with the treaty of 1742.
