In northeastern IN, south of Ft. Wayne; established Feb 7, 1835 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For Capt. William Wells (1770?-1812), a white man adopted by Miami Indian Chief Little Turtle (c.1752-1812), who served with the Indians; he returned to the white men and served as Indian agent, then fought the Indians at the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811)
