former metropolitan county, N central England. Created in the 1974 local government reorganization, the county largely embraced the Leeds conurbation and comprised five metropolitan districts (metropolitan boroughs): Calderdale, BradfordBradford,
city and metropolitan borough (1991 pop. 293,336), N central England, on a small tributary of the Aire River. It is a center of the worsted industry, which dates from the Middle Ages.
