Whampoa, Treaty of 1844

Whampoa, Treaty of (1844)

a treaty forced on China by France. It was signed on October 24 aboard a French ship in the harbor of Whampoa (Huangp’u) Island, near Canton. The treaty extended to France and its citizens the same rights and privileges that Great Britain and the USA had received by the Treaty of Nanking (1842), the Supplementary Treaty of the Bogue (1843), and the Treaty of Wanghia (1844).
