Whitten, Charles Arthur

(1909–  ) geodesist; born in Redfield, S.D. A member of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (1930–68) and its chief geodesist (1968–72), his computations and analysis of the earth's crustal movements furthered the international prominence of U.S. geodesy.
