(wĭl`bē), 1574–1638, English madrigal composer. Although only two sets of his madrigalsmadrigal,
name for two different forms of Italian music, one related to the poetic madrigal in the 14th cent., the other the most common form of secular vocal music in the 16th cent.

 (1598, 1609) are extant, their excellence distinguishes him as perhaps the greatest English madrigalist of the 16th cent.
