a device for cleaning the windshield of motor vehicles, trolleybuses, and streetcars; similar devices are used to remove precipitation and dirt from the rear windows and headlights of passenger cars. The glass areas are cleaned by the rocking motions of rubber wiper blades. Windshield wipers with electric and pneumatic drives are the most common types. Electric windshield wipers have a crank mechanism with a system of levers through reduction gears by an electric motor. Pneumatic windshield wipers are driven by the piston of a compressed-air motor equipped with a slide valve and connected to the vehicle’s compressed-air system through a gear transmission.
