Windsor, House of

 

a royal dynasty in Great Britain. The House of Windsor began in 1901 with the accession to the throne of Edward VII, the son of Queen Victoria (House of Hanover) and Prince Albert, a member of the German House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Until 1917 it bore the title of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Members of the House of Windsor are Edward VII (reigned 1901-10), George V (1910-36), Edward VIII (January to December 1936), George VI (1936-52), and Elizabeth II (since 1952).
