In west-central OH; organized Feb 3, 1845 from Marion, Crawford, Hardin, and Hancock counties. Name Origin: For the Wyandot Indians, a tribe of Iroquoian linguistic stock. Name is thought to mean 'islanders' or 'those who live on a peninsula,' from their original home on island in the Saint Lawrence River and on a peninsula. Also spelled Wyandotte.
