XMPP

(EXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) An XML-based protocol for real-time communications, originally developed by Jeremie Miller in 1998 for the Jabber instant messaging system. In 2004, the IETF standardized four elements of the protocol, and the XMPP Standards Organization (www.xmpp.org), formerly Jabber Software Foundation, is involved in future development. XMPP applications include instant messaging, presence, content syndication, as well as collaborative activities such as whiteboarding. See Jabber and presence.

Controller-switch interaction is served by standard southbound APIs such as OpenFlow [23], XMPP [26], or ForCES [14]; however, a similar level of standardization is not available at application-controller northbound interface.
XMPP can also serve as a messaging infrastructure for SOAP/WS-* Web services [40][41].

1) The XMPP approach: in order to aggregate networked instrumentation based on social rules, our research explored the above-mentioned XMPP [6], also known as Jabber (the name of the company that launched it)--an open protocol used for instant messaging.
To support useful services based on the massive information related to these things, several technologies such as REST (representational state transfer) [11], MQTT (message queuing telemetry transport) [12, 13], XMPP (extensible messaging and presence protocol) [14], and CoAP (constrained application protocol) [15] are being studied for information delivery, message process, and communication protocol.
With the said service-based architecture, the collaborative server or service manager can add or utilize or share media service for seamless collaboration using Web service technologies (SOAP, XML, WSDL, and XMPP) [5, 6] and smartphones' built-in communication features.
This is a reasonable way of using OpenFlow, although there are other approaches as well (e.g., XMPP) which are arguably even better because they work at a higher level of abstraction.
This type of social interaction will proliferate with the advent of HTML5 and as more developers use open standards such as XMPP and public Application Program Interfaces (APIs) to support platform services.
