Yangchou

 

a city in East China, in Kiangsu Province, on the left bank of the Yangtze River. Population, more than 200,000 (1975, estimate). Yangchou is connected by waterways with Shanghai and Nanking. Industry includes the manufacture of textiles and the production of mineral fertilizers. The city has a machine shop and such food-processing enterprises as vegetable oil and rice-polishing plants. Yangchou is the center of an important rice-growing region.
