elastic limit[i‚las′tis·tik ′lim·ət]
The maximum stress a solid can sustain without undergoing permanent deformation.
The limit of stress beyond which the strain cannot fully recover.
The greatest stress which a material is capable of sustaining without permanent deformation upon complete release of the stress.
The maximum stress that can be applied to a body and the strain will still completely disappear when the stress is removed. Beyond this limit, the body is deformed and does not return to its original shape when the stress is removed.
