(both: yĭn`chwän`), city (1994 est. pop. 412,900), capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China, on the Huang He (Yellow River). It is a shipping point for the products of the fertile Ningxia plain. Textiles, chemicals, rubber, and machinery are manufactured. Marco Polo visited Yinchuan in the 13th cent. Yinch’uan
Ninghsia, a city in northern China, on the Huangho. It is the administrative center of the Ninghsia-Huei Autonomous Region. Population, 60,000 (1956). There are machine-building, radiotechnological, electronic, and chemical industries. Its manufactures include woolen textiles. A steam power plant is also located there. Yinch’uan is the center of an agricultural region on the Yinch’uan Plain. It is also a landing.
