Zapoliarnyi

 

a city (since 1963) in Pechenga Raion, Murmansk Oblast, RSFSR. Population, 22,000 (1970). Zapoliarnyi has a railroad station 167 km northwest of Murmansk. It arose in 1956 with the opening of copper and nickel mines. Ore extraction and concentration is carried on, and there is a building-materials industry.


Zapoliarnyi

 

an urban-type settlement in the Komi ASSR. It is located 23 km northwest of Vorkuta. Coal is extracted there.

The Pechenga complex is divided into Matert (9-1059 m), Zhdanov (1059-2805 m), Zapolyarny (2805-4673 m), Luchlompolo (4673-4844 m), Pirttijarvi (4844-5642 m), Kuvernerinjoki (5642-5717 m), Majarvi (5717-6835 m) and Televi (6835-6842 m) formations (Orlov and Laverov, 1998).
Today the Norilsk-I deposit is worked by the Medvezhy Ruchey ("Bear Creek") open pit and the adjacent Zapolyarny underground mine.
These values are typical of both igneous (metadiabase, metaandesite, metaalbitophyre) and metasedimentary (arkose sandstone, limestone) rocks from the Proterozoic Zapolyarny, Luchlompolo, Pirttijarvi and Kuvernerinjoki Fms and also of synmetamorphogenic veins developed in these fault acts as a channel through which the mantle helium enters the upper crustal rocks.
