Zeitz

(tsīts), city (1994 pop. 37,461), Saxony-Anhalt, E central Germany, on the White Elster River. Manufactures include machinery, chocolate, sugar, and textiles. Of note in the city are the late-Gothic Church of St. Michael and a castle (17th cent.), whose church contains the tomb of the 16th-century scientist Georg Agricola.

a city in the German Democratic Republic, in Halle District, on the Weisse Elster River. Population, 44,500 (1975). Zeitz’ chemical industry is devoted mainly to the processing of brown coal. The city also produces leather goods, refrigeration equipment, and equipment for the brown coal industry. Brown coal is mined near Zeitz.
