Žmuidzinavičius, Antanas Jono
Born Oct. 19 (31), 1876, in the village of Seiriiai, present-day Lazdiiai Raion, Lithuanian SSR; died Aug. 9, 1966, in Kaunas. Soviet painter. People’s Artist of the USSR (1957); corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR from 1958.
žmuidzinavičius studied in private schools in Warsaw (1898-1901) and Paris (1905-06). Having lived in Vilnius since 1906, he moved to Kaunas in 1919. He was the chairman of the Lithuanian Society of Artists from 1907 to 1934. 2muidzinavicius was primarily a landscape artist. His works include Nemunas Before the Storm (1912), Pupils ofNemunas (1927), Two Pines (1930), and The Forest to the State (1948)— all of them are in the M. K. Ciurlionis Kaunas Museum of Art. He also painted the series The Kaunas Sea Will Be Here (1953-65). žmuidzinavičius taught in Kaunas at the School of Art (1926-40), the Institute of Applied and Decorative Art (1944-51, becoming a professor there in 1947), and the Polytechnic Institute (1953-57). He also taught at the Art Institute of the Lithuanian SSR in Vilnius (1951-53). žmuidzinavičius received the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals. A museum of his works and collections is in Kaunas.
