Znamensk

 

(previously Velau), an urban-type settlement in Gvardeisk Raion, Kaliningrad Oblast, RSFSR, on the right bank of the Pregolia River at the mouth of the Lava River. Railroad station 50 km east of Kaliningrad. It is the site of a paper mill, a flour mill, and a plant producing margarine.

Buida was born in 1954 in the former Prussian town of Wehlau, renamed Znamensk ("Banner Town") by the Soviet authorities, and situated at the confluence of the Alle and Pregel Rivers (in Russian, Lana and Pregol'ia, respectively), some thirty miles east of the former province center of Konigsberg.
