Aav studied with A. Kapp at the Tallin Conservatory, graduating in 1926. He directed amateur choruses and in 1938 was principal conductor of choruses at the Festival of Song. The composer of the first important Estonian opera, Vikertsy (The Vikings), staged in 1928, Aav also wrote a symphony (1938), the symphonic poem Life (1934), and numerous songs and choruses.
