(until 1957, the stanitsa [large cossack village] of Aksai), a city; center of the Aksai Raion, Rostov Oblast, RSFSR. Located at the confluence of the Aksai and Don rivers. Railroad station 18 km northeast of Rostov-on-Don. Population, 21,000 (1968). Industry consists of a canning plant, glass factory, the Kardandetal’ Plant, a brickyard, a plastics factory, and a river-fleet repair and maintenance base.
(known as the settlement of Kazakhstan until 1967), city and administrative center of Burlinsk Raion, Ural’sk Oblast, Kazakh SSR. Aksai is located in the north of the oblast and has the Kazakhstan railroad station, on the Ural’sk-Iletsk line. Population 13,400 (1968). Aksai has a factory for the production of reinforced concrete.
(or Asagalyl’; at the headwaters, Bonnoiiasei), a river in Dagestan ASSR and Chechen-Ingush ASSR, a left tributary of the Aktash River. The Aksai is 144 km long; its basin has an area of 1390 sq km. In its upper reaches it is a mountain river, arising in the Andiiskii mountain range; in its lower reaches, it becomes a canyon river. It is fed primarily from artesian waters and is used for irrigation. It has a hydroelectric power plant.
the right branch of the lower Don in Rostov Oblast, RSFSR. The Aksai is 79 km long. The Tuzlov River flows into it from the right. On its broad floodplain are kitchen gardens and melon fields. The city of Novocherkassk is on the Aksai.
