a scientific discipline that studies the theoretical bases for designing automatic measurement and control instruments and information procuring systems. In its methods of study, autometry is a branch of technical cybernetics whose objective is to automate the collection and processing of information obtained by measurement.

Autometry analyzes the initial data concerning the objects under study and the form of the quantitative output information; validates design principles for the optimal (in the prescribed meaning) technical methods of measurement, control, and technical diagnosis and the methods of acquiring and processing the measurement information; and investigates methods of efficient planning for measurement experiments and the creation of an information measurement system designed for use in industry, scientific investigations, and so forth.
