Vautier, Benjamin

 

Born on Apr. 27, 1829, in Morges, Switzerland; died on Apr. 25, 1898, in Dusseldorf. German painter of Swiss origin.

Vautier studied in Geneva from 1847 and in Dusseldorf from 1850. One of the most eminent genre painters of the Dusseldorf School, he painted pictures about the life of Swiss and Black Forest peasants (Children at Dinner, 1857, the Hermitage, Leningrad; Peasants Playing Cards, 1862, Museum of Fine Arts, Leipzig) that showed exactness of observation but at times were not devoid of idyllic sentimentality.
