Butler, Howard Crosby

Butler, Howard Crosby

(1872–1922) archaeologist; born in Croton Falls, N.Y. He taught art and architectural history at Princeton (1901–22) and led three expeditions to Syria from 1899 to 1909. His supervision of the excavations at Sardis, Turkey, (1910–22), generated his most important published work, including Sardis (1922).
