Location:11 miles west of Tierra Amarilla via US 64 and 84 and NM 95.
Facilities:250 developed campsites (54 with electric hookups), primitive campsites, restrooms (é), showers, picnic areas (é), 2 group shelters, trails, marina, mast-up sailboat storage facility, boat ramps, 4 courtesy docks, visitor center.
Activities:Camping, boating (no-wake speeds only), sailing, fishing, ice fishing, swimming, windsurfing, paddlesports, hiking, wildlife viewing, cross-country skiing.
Special Features:Lake Heron is a picturesque lake set among tall pines. A hiking and fishing trail along Rio Chama is accessed by a dramatic caprock stairway near Heron Dam. The 5.5-mile trail to El Vado Lake State Park (see separate entry) crosses the river by suspension bridge and offers scenic views along the route.
