Diel changes in the horizontal distribution of zooplankton in the
littoral zone of two shallow eutrophic lakes.
Despite the fact that YOY bluegill appeared in the
littoral zone 1 mo later in 1992 than in 1991, bluegill in three of four lakes were essentially invulnerable to bass upon first appearance in the
littoral zone; [less than] 20% of the bluegill were considered vulnerable in Lawrence, TL2, and Warner.
The large number of new records for the lake established in the present study was due simply to sampling in a poorly explored habitat, the
littoral zone. Hence, the number of copepod species identified rose from 12 to 21, of cladocerans from 18 to 40, of rotifers from 60 to 112, and of testate amoebae from 1 to 48.
Benthics grew consistently better in the
littoral zone than in open water.
Analysis of colony density as a response variable excluded lake area and its correlates (watershed area,
littoral zone area, lake perimeter, total cover of floating leaved macrophytes, total cover of all macrophyte species) as potential predictor variables due to the likelihood of multicollinearity.
vernalis) have been reported in the
littoral zone of Marmara Island for the first time in this study.
In the
littoral zone, the highest densities of M uruguayensis occurred during the cool season (mean surface temperature 23.7 [+ or -] 1.2[degrees]C) and the lowest density occurred in the wann season (mean surface temperature 28.8 [+ or -] 1.3[degrees]C) (see Figure 2).
The presence of larvae in the
littoral zone in both estuaries correlated with date, depth, and all sampling devices, as well as with interaction terms (Table 3).
Both species also use the
littoral zone as reproductive habitat in Lago de Patzcuaro (Garcia de Leon, 1984), and these areas have been lost in more than 70% (Alcocer-Durand & Bernal-Brooks, 2002).
The
littoral zone was examined both in the protected Seongsan lagoon (33[degrees]27'2718"N, 126[degrees]56'00.39"E) and in the open bay (33[degrees]27'30.47"N, 126[degrees]56'05.49"E) at the cape with Sunrise Peak volcano (Figure 1).
The
littoral zone of the reservoir, where water abstraction for irrigation and human consumption occurs, is the most contaminated lake area (CHESF, 2004).
