Poe thus questioned the assumption of Euclidian geometry that the axioms of this system are self-evident truths; and he did this precisely in the crucial period in which Janos Bolyai, Nikolai Lobachevsky, Karl Gauss and Georg Riemann were laying the foundations of non-Euclidian geometry, which is grounded not on axioms, but on "spatial definitions," these being always consistent, although inconceivable (Beaver 1976: 400).
