Mariner 6, 7
Two identical 413-kg US probes that passed Mars at distances of 3412 km and 3424 km on July 31 and Aug. 5, 1969, respectively. Mariner 6 photographed part of Mars' equatorial region while Mariner 7 examined the southern hemisphere and southern polar cap. A total of 201 photographs were returned, while other experiments measured surface temperatures, atmospheric pressure and composition, and Mars' diameter.Collins Dictionary of Astronomy © Market House Books Ltd, 2006
