Established: 1936.
Location:100 miles northeast of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites.
Activities:Boating, canoeing, fishing, educational programs.
Special Features:Maxwell NWR supports a wide variety of habitats and is home to more than 219 species of birds, 70 of which nest on the refuge. The refuge contains 2,200 acres of short-grass prairie, 900 acres of lakes, 400 acres of agricultural fields, and approximately 200 acres of woodlots or other lands recovering from a long history of farming and grazing.
Habitats: 3,700 acres of short-grass prairie, playa lakes, woodlots, wetlands and agricultural lands.
Access: Open 24 hours.
Wild life: Ducks, geese, swans, sandhill cranes, bald and golden eagles, falcons, hawks, great horned owls, shorebirds, songbirds, prairie dogs, mule deer, and occasional mountain lion and black bear.
