Phoxinus

a genus of freshwater fish of the Cyprinidae family.

The body length of Phoxinus does not exceed 20 cm. The scales are small. There are about 10 species, found in the rivers of Europe, Asia, and North America. The coloring of the minnow, P. phoxinus, is very bright during spawning. Other species of Phoxinus are found in small rivers, irrigation ditches, swamp springs, and lakes. P. percnurus(length, to 15 cm; weight, to 100 g) is important commercially in Yakutia.

Only adult stages of the species were included in the study with the exception of Phoxinus erthyrogaster at the Spring Creek site, which were divided into juvenile (<40 mm) and adult (>40 mm) size classes.
However, much of the spawning behavior, age structure, and growth are likely to be similar to other Phoxinus species where lifespans are generally limited to a maximum of three years, fecundities range from 724 to 2872 mature ova per female, and age class structure is dominated by one and two year old fish (Starnes and Starnes, 1981).
We surveyed the populations of Phoxinus erythrogaster in Warren and Tallahatchie counties (Slack et al., 1995), and herein describe the habitat and ichthyofaunal associations of these populations.
To locate all accounts of Chrosomus spawning behavior, we conducted a Google Scholar search using the search parameters, "Chrosomus" or "Phoxinus" or "spawning" and "reproduction" or "observations," as well as a Web of Science search for "TOPIC: (chrosomus) OR TOPIC: (phoxinus) AND TOPIC: (spawning) AND TOPIC: (reproduction)." Finally, we searched through the state fish taxonomy books for all states where Chrosomus are native.
