In west-central VA, west of Lynchburg; organized Mar 30, 1838 from Botetourt and Montgomery counties. Name Origin: From an Indian word spelled Roanoak by the first English settlers. Indians applied it to an island, meaning 'place where white shells are found' or perhaps 'shells which are used for money.' Or possibly named for the lost colony of Roanoke
