l) (37) The three downward strokes of the introductory capital "M" of "Markham" are formed by a series of loops infilled with decorative penwork ending in open rectangular spaces; two ending strokes at the top of the letter are finished with
strapwork. Whoever the court scribe of this membrane may have been, (38) his script was clearly not that of Ricardus Fran-ciscus; although Franciscus is known to have written semi- or pseudo-legal and charter-like [documents (39) and although he can certainly be classed as a professional scribe, he is unlikely to have been a clerk employed in the court of the King's Bench.
Hidden away in the

With the introduction of Serlio and Vitruvius into the Low Countries, it would appear that architecture began to develop along more rigorously classicizing lines, and indeed this is true, but the authors here demonstrate how Coecke's illustrations tended to favor the more inventive aspects of Vitruvian style, such as the cartouches and more elaborate

(In fact, despite the connection with Holbein, these carpets also appear in 15thcentury Italian paintings.) The pattern of this early Turkish carpet consists of small octagonal medallions and diamond-shaped

Disappointingly, the Orange Chamber was a resolute shade of white as the name came from the orange trees on the
