Despite their oxygen deficit, these waters have inhabitants that are adapted, especially some groups of crustaceans, such as the Remipedia and the Thermosbaenacea, as well as many species of amphipods, copepods, and ostracods.
The class Malacostraca includes the superorders Pancarida (order Thermosbaenacea), Peracarida (orders Mysidacea, Amphipoda, and Isopoda), and Eucarida (order Decapoda) (Covich & Thorp 1991).
